The 2 New Mega Cruise Ships Headed to Miami

The ship is under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France and will be home-ported in Miami. Fortunately, Icon of the Seas' nighttime entertainment is also a great equalizer. Its ice skating performance, rendition of the Broadway hit "Wizard of Oz," and multi-disciplinary dance, swim, and dive show are complimentary to all guests. But it is possible to vacation on the mega-ship without giving into any of its upcharged restaurants and activities.

(Only Suites are granted these robes to begin with.) Today, I will try many of the activities these ships have on offer to provide their clientele with a sense of never-ceasing motion. Storm Chasers consists of falling from the “mast” down a long, twisting neon tube filled with water, like being the camera inside your own colonoscopy, as you hold on to the handles of a mat, hoping not to die. The tube then flops you down headfirst into a trough of water, a Royal Caribbean baptism. And now I understand what the maître d’ was saying to me on the first day of my cruise.

MIAMI’S NEWEST MEGASHIP—MSC WORLD AMERICA—TO USHER IN A NEW WORLD OF CRUISING, NOW AVAILABLE TO BOOK

The ship includes six waterslides, seven swimming pools, an ice-skating rink, a theater and more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges. Not only will the ship have eight different neighborhoods for travelers to explore, but the 7,600 passengers allowed onboard will also have seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides and about 40 bar and dining options to choose from. The Icon will be joined by two more ships in the coming years – one in 2025, Star of the Seas, and another in 2026.

A day or two before I got off the ship, I decided to make use of my balcony, which I had avoided because I thought the view would only depress me further. This entire time, I had been living in the ship’s Disneyland, Surfside, the neighborhood full of screaming toddlers consuming milkshakes and candy. And as I leaned out over my balcony, I beheld a slight vista of the sea and surf that I thought I had been missing. The sea was frothy and infinite and blue-green beneath the span of a seagull’s wing. And though it had been trod hard by the world’s largest cruise ship, it remained.

If you want alcohol and sodas, be prepared to pay for a beverage package. The new MSC vessel will be the final ship in the fleet to begin operations from the US since suspensions started in Spring 2020. MSC Meraviglia was the first in the fleet to resume from the country in August 2021, the ship is currently sailing out of PortMiami in Florida. MSC Divina followers by restarting in September and also becoming the first MSC vessel to homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida. The first of MSC’s Seaside EVO-class ships arrived in Miami on Sunday ahead of her inaugural cruise to the Caribbean on November 20.

Brand New Cruise Ships Will Sail Miami Over the Next Year

MSC Cruises has yet to announce many details about this new ship including specific itineraries. We do know that the vessel will homeport in Miami and sail cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean starting in the summer of 2025. I am constantly told by my fellow passengers that “everybody here has a story.” Yes, I want to reply, but everybody everywhere has a story. You, the reader of this essay, have a story, and yet you’re not inclined to jump on a cruise ship and, like Duck Necklace, tell your story to others at great pitch and volume. Maybe what they’re saying is that everybody on this ship wants to have a bigger, more coherent, more interesting story than the one they’ve been given.

Royal Bay

Royal Caribbean® offers plenty of bolder-than-ever weekend sailings to some of the Caribbean’s most stunning shores onboard the world’s most incredible cruise ships – no days off required. Which means you can fill your year with even more bucket list adventures. Break up with your weekly routine with a weekend cruise from Miami and set sail on a memory-filled getaway that’ll take you so much further than a standard staycation. Upon completion, shore power capability will be available at five cruise terminals with the ability to plug in three ships at a time. Shore power will allow a cruise ship to turn off their primary engines while docked, resulting in reduced air emissions.

Icon of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship ever built when the ship begins to sail out of Miami in early 2024. Royal Caribbean is calling the ship the best family vacation in the world and the vessel will be jammed packed with features. Among the new lineup of ships that will be departing from PortMiami beginning October 2023 are the Oceania Vista, Carnival Cruise Line Costa Venezia, and Scenic Eclipse II. In November 2023, Crystal Cruises Serenity, MSC Cruises EXPLORA I, and Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian VIVA; and in December 2023, Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur will begin sailing from PortMiami. In January 2024, Royal Caribbean Group Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, will set sail from the Port. MSC World America will sail from MSC Cruises’ brand new, state-of-the-art terminal at PortMiami, which is set to be the largest cruise terminal in North America once completed.

Guests staying in suites have access to a shared outdoor lounge.

The aforementioned gangway opens up directly onto a thriving mall (I will soon learn it is imperiously called the “Royal Promenade”), presently filled with yapping passengers beneath a ceiling studded with balloons ready to drop. Crew members from every part of the global South, as well as a few Balkans, are shepherding us along while pressing flutes of champagne into our hands. By a humming Starbucks, I drink as many of these as I can and prepare to find my cabin. I show my blue Suite Sky SeaPass Card (more on this later, much more) to a smiling woman from the Philippines, and she tells me to go “aft.” Which is where, now? As someone who has rarely sailed on a vessel grander than the Staten Island Ferry, I am confused.

There’s the aforementioned Royal Promenade, where I had drunk with the Rands, and where a pair of dueling pianos duel well into the night. There’s Surfside, a kids’ neighborhood full of sugary garbage, which looks out onto the frothy trail that the behemoth leaves behind itself. Thrill Island refers to the collection of tubes that clutter the ass of the ship and offer passengers six waterslides and a surfing simulation.

“It is only pendejo dining today, sir.” “But I have a suite! ” I say, already starting to catch on to the ship’s class system. I am wearing a DADDY’S LITTLE MEATBALL T-shirt, I want to say to him. I put on my meatball T-shirt and head for one of the dining rooms to get a late lunch. In the elevator, I stick out my chest for all to read the funny legend upon it, but soon I realize that despite its burnished tricolor letters, no one takes note.

There’s the Hideaway, an adult zone that plays music from a vomit-slathered, Brit-filled Alicante nightclub circa 1996 and proves a big favorite with groups of young Latin American customers. This mall is the one that’s called Central Park, perhaps in homage to the Olmsted-designed bit of greenery in the middle of my hometown. Although on land I would be delighted to own a suite with Central Park views, here I am deeply depressed.

The ship, which took 900 days to build, is set to set sail from PortMiami on Jan. 27 and will be offering year-round alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. About 285 miles away in Port Canaveral, Florida, MSC Seashore will offer a range of itineraries departing on Thursdays and Sundays. These include 3 to 4-night cruises to the Bahamas, which will call on Nassau and Ocean Cay, and 7-night Western Caribbean Cruises, which will stop at Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico and Ocean Cay.

Of course, it only makes sense to debut a new cruise terminal with a brand new ship. Departing every Saturday throughout the summer, the 215,863-gross ton MSC World America will alternate between 7-night, round-trip, Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean voyages. Four MSC ships will homeport in the US in summer of 2025, including MSC World America, which will sail her inaugural season from Miami, Florida. The christening of MSC Seashore will also double up as the official opening of Ocean Cay. Guests onboard the special naming ceremony cruise will include a select group of travel advisors, agents, company executives and personnel, and special guests. They will have a first look at one of the most innovative and newest ships to sail from PortMiami.

This will significantly reduce air emissions, bringing us closer to a greener future. It is powered by six dual-fuel engines, which can be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fuel alternative that the Cruise Lines International Association says reduces sulfur and greenhouse gas emissions. However, some environmentalists worry LNG-powered ships increase methane emissions. Other say that vacationers generate eight times more carbon on a cruise than they do on land. The arrival of Icon of the Seas represents a historical moment for Royal Caribbean, and it ushers in a new kind of cruise ship experience. The new 1,198-foot cruise ship will begin offering cruises from Miami, Florida on January 27, 2024.
